Sunday's game against the Steelers presented the Giants an opportunity to prove that they're real contenders. Hold off on making reservations for Bowl LI in Houston.
A 24-14 loss to the Steelers showed that the skepticism about the Giants' six-game winning streak was warranted. Many of the problems that were swept under the rug during a run against inferior opponents surfaced again on Sunday at Heinz Field.
While the Steelers (7-5) are a flawed team, they were plenty good enough to control the all game in front of 65,825 Terrible Towel-waving fans. The Giants (8-4) struggled to move the ball throughout the game. When they were able to mount drives, they were undone by turnovers.
Quarterback Eli Manning completed 24-of-39 passes for 194 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Manning threw a killer interception as the Giants were driving midway through the second quarter. Trailing 5-0, Manning threw a pass to seldom-used tight end Larry Donnell in the end zone. Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons undercut the seam route and picked off the pass at the 2-yard line.
Timmons' 58-yard return set up a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown that gave the Steelers an 11-0 lead. That was too much for the Giants' anemic offense to overcome.
The Giants are now three games behind the NFC East-leading Cowboys with four games remaining. The Cowboys come to MetLife Stadium next Sunday night looking to avenge their 20-19 loss in the opener.
The Giants' defense did its part, as rookie cornerback Eli Apple bounced back from a recent rough stretch to record a fumble recovery and an interception. Apple's fumble recovery set up a Rashad Jennings 13-yard touchdown on a screen pass to cut the Steelers' lead to 14-7 midway through the third quarter.
The Steelers quickly erased any hopes of a comeback with a 7-play, 88-yard drive that was capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ladarius Green. Green, who had five catches for 97 yards in three games this , finished with six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown, as the Giants continued to struggle covering tight ends.
A desperation interception by Manning on fourth down early in the fourth quarter sealed the Giants' fate. Manning padded his stat line with a garbage-time touchdown drive in the final minute.
Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had 10 catches for 105 yards, but was left frustrated by a lack of penalties on some his game-high 16 targets. Beckham was only back to return one punt, which was kicked out of bounds.
Left tackle Ereck Flowers got the game off to a bad start with a holding penalty in the end zone on the Giants' second possession that resulted in a safety.
